Parenting with PLAY!

the
sock game
How To Play

The Location: A large bed, or anywhere you're comfortable moving around on all fours & wrestling with your child
Equipment Needed: A pair of socks each. (I use hiking socks which are easier to be pulled off)
Aim of the game: To be the first person to take off the other's socks

How to Play: Allow your child to ultimately win. The purpose is to offer enough resistance to make it a challenge whilst still being fun.
As my daughter has gotten older we play best of 3 or 5 games (depending on time) and I win the first 1 or 2 games, whilst she wins overall.
Benefits: Playing this game & wrestling games like it allows your child to feel powerful again. This counters the many, many times when they feel powerless or without control which can then lead to them to feeling anxious, becoming aggressive, or generally becoming uncooperative or withdrawn.
These games also help reconnect you emotionally & physically. As our children grow up, we cuddle & hold them less. Healthy physical touch is really important in releasing the 'love hormone' oxytocin and helping you & your child to feel connected and loving towards each other again.
